Apple season in WNC is a big deal. I mean, like, a REALLY big deal. Now I know what you’re thinking, “Besides being a healthy, tasty snack, what’s so great about apples?” Well my friend, a lot.
The thing about apple season is that it’s so much more than just junk to eat, as Jess and I were happy to discover. With our men (her’s big, mine little and more adorable than all of us) we decided to experience exactly what all the fuss was about.

That’s why we planned our day-trip to Grandad’s Apples.

Sure, we started with apple-picking, as I believe almost everyone does. It’s the most logical place to begin. The rows and rows trees are calling to you before you can even get out of the car. Something about those bright green branches dotted with green, red, and yellow is so romantic (in the classic Wordsworth kinda way).

Climbing to grab the beauties at the top, playing tag between the trees, and pushing the wheelbarrow around like a Star Wars fighter pilot provided a couple hours entertainment.

After, we were all a little sweaty and our cheeks were sore from laughing. We decided to follow up our labors with a tasty treat. We headed to the big barn and grabbed apple donuts, apple ice cream, apple cookies, and apple pie. All made fresh from the fruits we had just been playing among. I don’t have to tell you, they were all delicious.

Logan and I left shortly after, naps are always welcome for little ones after such a busy day. Also, he’s certainly had his fair-share of corn mazes, so we left that adventure to the lovebirds.

Overall, it was a wonderful day. We got some tasty treats, played for hours, and Logan met his new favorite person in Jess’s husband, Luciano. No doubt, me and my little man will be back next fall!

I love doing festive activities to really feel the spirit of each season. In fall I dream of apple picking, walking down the aisle of apple trees, feeling the fresh crisp fall air on my face, warmed by the sun. Looking left and seeing apples, looking right and seeing apples, glancing down and seeing apples that have fallen. All the different colors and different types of apples and being free to just pick any one that you fancy to have it nourish you with all the richness they have to offer. Yes, okay, apples are one of my favorite foods and I usually always have a snack of them. Apples with almond butter, oats, walnuts, coconut flakes, you just can’t go wrong! Sometimes my husband makes fun of me for eating apples for dinner, he’ll joke and ask what I had for dinner and follow it quickly by saying “apples? Insert giggle here”.

At Grandad’s Apple Orchard we didn’t just pick apples but we enjoyed all the festivities they had to offer. Maggie and I met up and brought along two apple picker helpers. My helper turned out to be very useful; standing at 6’4” he was better than a ladder. Maggie’s helper was a bit shorter but damn cute and boy, he had an eye for picking the best apples! Plus he pushed the wheel barrel almost the whole time. After filling up our bags to the brim with apples and frolicking around the fields we treated ourselves to some home-made apple treats Grandad’s was serving up! Maggie and Logan soon left but Luciano and I surely made a day of this place. Most of the time taken up with the corn field maze, being in there for 2 hours we found a fine line between fun and challenging. We found ourselves sitting on two rocking chairs after enjoying just sitting and watching everyone else having a great time.

It was definitely a great apple-venture! The sun was shining, the apples were crisp, and the company couldn’t have been better. I think we found a new yearly tradition!

❤️, Jessica
