Life with a six year-old boy means that I’m regularly forced to answer questions like, “Who’s your favorite Marvel super hero?” and “If you could have any super power, what would it be?” For the record, his favorite is Spiderman; and I would love to be able to conjure coffee and snacks out of thin air.

In reality though, each of us is born with a secret super power. We may not think of it that way, but we should. Every person has a talent, a gift, a knack for something that isn’t necessarily common to the masses. Our talents are our superpowers, our gifts to the world around us. Personally, mine is probably my french toast, though my Death Star pancakes are a close second.

Our featured artist for November, painter Jessica Nielsen, is definitely making the most of her own superpower. Take for example, today’s piece, “Turquoise Garden”.

In our interview, I asked Nielsen where she found inspiration for her style. The swirls of color and geometric shapes filling the spaces within and around living creatures speaks of a universal heartbeat and hopefulness. “I’m always drawing boxes around things in my mind. I can’t help it. I’m doing it right now, sitting in this room.”
In my last post, I wrote about Nielsen’s ability to create emotion in her audience. It’s obvious to me that Nielsen’s superpower lies in her ability to spread joy through her work. Whatever dark, depressing, downtrodden nonsense is ailing you, her collection of paintings has a tonic to help. There are gently uplifting cave scenes, calm-creating beta fish, and even passion-igniting dripping diamonds. In the vibrant motion of her work, the inner child is called out to play.
Soon, hopefully, the energizing effects of Nielsen’s collection will be shared with many of the people who could use it the most. Her paintings are under consideration to fill the new wing of Mission Hospital. Art has been established as a wonderful therapy tool; it isn’t crazy to think that we may use it to bridge the gap between emotional and physical healing.

On December 7th, join me in celebrating the work of this amazing and inspiring Asheville artist. Jessica Nielsen will be holding her first studio opening party Friday, at the Hatchery Studios in the River Arts District. From 5-9, come meet the artist (and me!), and catch some great deals on original pieces, which will make the best gifts for yourself, or someone you love. Hope to see you there!
