What do you picture when you hear the term flower farm? Flower heaven? Can you feel the sun warming your face, hear the bees and butterflies buzzing while brightly-colored petals sway in the breeze? Well I’ll tell you, it IS flower heaven.

Jess and I were lucky enough to be able to attend Lady Luck Flower Farm‘s community pick day. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect, and neither could that morning. The sun was bring but it wasn’t too hot, the meandering drive through the mountain back roads in Jess’s Jeep was enough to inspire even the most lackluster soul to adventure.

When we arrived, we found the place to be a living fantasy. The farm is worked by the family that owns it, and they were out to welcome us. They gave us some directions around the field, we grabbed our buckets and we were on our way.

I’m not sure how long we spent there. What I do know for sure is that I was much later getting home than I said I would be. It wasn’t to be helped. I wanted to lay down between rows of dahlias and sunflowers and never move. I could have become part of that gorgeous landscape, maybe the butterflies would eventually try to feed me, too. Slim chance though, they barely noticed anything other than the colorful beauties that gently swayed on their stalks.

Jess and I had several reasons for attending this picking session. Like many, we share a mutual love for flowers and nature, and simply had to see what the fuss was about, though there were more practical reasons, too. We were able to buy so many in bulk, that we saved money by constructing our own bouquets for the several friends we had celebrating birthdays. Also, as this time of year is a popular one for hosting parties, we were able to whip more self-made bouquets to use as decorations. There are few smells I appreciate more than that of fresh flowers.

So, let’s evaluate the success of our adventure to Lady Luck Flower Farm:

1. We indulged girlhood fantasies by frolicking through fields of flowers.

2. We saved money and created more meaningful and satisfying decorations and gifts.

3. We discovered and gave support to a local business and family.

4. We embarked on another perfect sunny day adventure, one which will definitely be repeated in the future.

*Jess here adding her favorite part of the trip-

5. We laughed historically the whole way home from when we drove back down the mountain without thinking of TIEING the buckets of flowers down, so as we went over a bump and when we turned around saw two 5 gallon buckets full of water and flowers flying at our faces, though no harm was done to my Jeep (Jeeps are made for this??) or the flowers, thank god, I couldn’t stop laughing as Maggie had to sit in the back to hold the buckets down as she was flying all over as well, this being difficult since I took the back seat out. The Jeep was filled of screams and laughs and we found appropriate for the situation- bluegrass music.
