When the sun is shining in Asheville, most locals are hard-put to stay inside. Most find excuses to drag their work outside, or take a slightly longer stroll at lunch. Jess and I decided to show you one of our ideal ways to soak up a sunny day, which is with what we call a “Boutique Crawl”. This is almost a cheat, as it costs nothing (though the option is always open), and there’s constantly something new to discover.

As a bonus, we put together a categorized list of ten of our favorite shops, plus a surprise bonus at the end! You should also know, several of these businesses are still young, if not brand new; so be sure to watch the video for a taste of what each shop has to offer.

FYI: The list you’re about to see is filled with locally-owned businesses that offer something special to Asheville. Many are involved with charity work and either host events, or give systematically to non-profits both here and abroad. Also, most of these shops are still pretty new, so you are likely to discover something you haven’t before. As everyone knows, we have a special affinity for Boss Babes, and the women behind the names you see below are some truly inspiring souls. Asheville is lucky to have them!

Lifestyle:

Hazel Twenty – Downtown

Though the name has been around for a few years, this mobile fashion boutique has recently opened a flagship store right on Patton Avenue. If you’re into supporting Boss Babes, don’t miss Hazel Twenty. It helps that the selection here is both stylish and functional. This is a great place to find your closet’s next staples.

Nest Boutique + DIY Studio – Biltmore Village

It’s worth a trip to Biltmore Village for Nest alone. As this was our first stop, we were a bit hard to wrangle in here. Every turn of the head was met with new temptation. For me, it was in the form of a yellow bell-sleeved body suit that made my Hufflepuff heart sing. While you’re there, check out the list of upcoming DIY classes and workshops. We haven’t had the chance to take a class here yet, but the day is definitely coming. We will certainly be updating our Continuing Education post soon!

Royal Peasantry – Downtown

Whether you’re looking for fresh functional solutions or your next lavish festival getup, you have to see this shop. With a commitment to ethical production, all items are created using “castoff treasures of a wasteful society.” Fabrics and garments, gems and stones, all are claimed and put into action by these self-professed “Noble Scavengers”. The results are incredible. The treasures hidden here can’t be found anywhere else, as evidenced by Jess swiftly claiming her new favorite jacket. Fall is still a few weeks away, but I have it on good authority she’s used her living room as a runway at least twice since our trip to Royal Peasantry. (Thanks Luciano!)

Virtue Boutique – Downtown

This is a dangerous place for us, full of temptation. It’s easy to get lost among all the racks and walk out with an entirely new wardrobe. Fortunately, it’s one of the more affordable boutiques in the city, so it isn’t quite as hard on our wallets.

Ware – Downtown

This store is brand-spanking-new, as in the doors just opened a few weeks ago. This is a new kind of lifestyle store, with a focus on products that are ethically made and sustainable. On a side note: I purchased my new favorite bra, it’s so comfortable my boyfriend probably thinks I’ve had it medically attached to my body.

Specialty:

Downtown Books and News – Downtown

This popped on our list by accident. As if we would just walk by without entering. We definitely spent a little money here; but as it was all on used books, the final price tag wasn’t too bad.

Earth Magick – Downtown

Described as a “Metaphysical Supply store”, we found Earth Magick to be full of enchanting treasures we didn’t know we needed. They even offer Tarot Readings during limited hours, so be sure to check their site for more information.

Moonlight Makers – Downtown

I’m not sure there’s anything in this world that Jess loves as much as food puns. Well, except for that tall Brazilian guy. No doubt Luciano will soon find his old shirts replaced with new ones that say things like “I wet my plants” and “My heart beets for you.” Moonlight Makers is definitely one of our new go-to shops, and all my friends and family should expect gifts from here in the near future.

Gifts:

Duncan & York Modern Market – East Asheville

Featuring local and handmade items, this is a one-stop shop for all your gift-giving needs. The collection here is eclectic and exciting. From books and toys, to a tasteful card for your humorless mother-in-law, you will find something for everyone here.

L.O.F.T. of Asheville – Downtown

This is one of my all-time favorite shops in Asheville. There really is a bit of everything, to the point that it’s tough to take it all in with just one visit. I especially love that so much of it is Asheville-centric, and possibly even offensive.

Unique to Asheville:

Show and Tell Pop-Up Shop – Roving (whaaaa?)

In Asheville, we love popups. Whether it’s a guest chef taking over a kitchen for the night, or a mobile clothing boutique parked outside a brewery, locals are sure to go snooping. What makes this particular popup so special, is it’s ability to give a storefront to many creators that wouldn’t have one otherwise. Combining local and national (but mostly local) art, crafts, indie gifts, and more, you will absolutely find something to fall in love with. The best part is coming across pieces by locals I love, like buttons and postcards by Jennifer Russ, the original painter-mom-rockstar.

Whatever you do, don’t take our word for it. “Get Out” and check out these boutiques yourself. We guarantee you will discover something new to love. Whether it’s an eco-friendly toothbrush, or a workshop instructing you on how to make stacking rings, there’s nothing ordinary about shopping in Asheville. Be sure to watch the video for sneak peeks of what to expect, and just to chuckle along with us.

PRO-TIP: Follow the links to the sites listed above, and go follow these shops on Instagram. I know this may not sound like a cheat, but nothing beats getting the best style tips and sale announcements.
